Wine and Monastic Gastronomy

Do you want to combine wine and gastronomy in a sacred place, far away from other distractions? This route is offering a unique experience* to the wineries in Mount Athos. Your wine trip will start from Ouranoupolis and will take you to Agion Oros-Holy Mount Athos; home to 20 monasteries and 12 Sketes under the direct jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. The Athonite monasteries feature a rich collection of well-preserved artifacts, rare books, ancient documents, and artworks of immense historical value, listing Mount Athos to the World’s Heritage Sites since 1988. The wines carry the appellation of Protected Geographical Indication Mount Athos. One of the most outstanding trademarks of the vineyard of Mount Athos is that the land is entirely isolated, cloaked by Mediterranean forest and the sea. All these places are sacred landscapes, combining mountainous and sea beauties, promising unforgettable wine, hunting and exploring.

Meet the “Tsantali” family among the oldest wine families in Greece and the modern winery “Hilandar wines” housed in a traditional, stone - building with cellars located near the vineyard of Saint Savvas. Wines steeped in monastic tradition made with love and devotion by monks of Hilandar since 1198. The vineyards of “Metochi Mylopotamos” stretches among rocks, an endless river, an olive grove and a green forest, οn the east coast of Mount Athos, where the first sun’s rays are spread from the edge of the Aegean Sea. In the first Metochi (Farm) of the Monastery of Megisti Lavra, a vineyard with traditional wine production was planted in 973 AD. Monk Epifanios continued the production and was one of the most emblematic figures of Wine and Gastronomy.
