Start your journey from Alexandroupolis and “Hatzisavva Vineyards” and head to the Cave of the Cyclops on the way to Maronia. Taste the Ismaro-Maronian wine in “Domaine Kikones” (Rodopi-Komotini) from organically cultivated vineyards. The terroir creates the unique characteristics of Thracian winemaking. The wine maker Melina Tassou leads the New "Kikones team" in this worldwide known winery. Continue your journey and meet a contemporary Ulysses at “Vourvoukeli Estate” in Avdira (Xanthi). Nikos and Flora Vourvoukelis founded the winery but nowadays, the two older sons, Giorgos and Odysseas, are mainly involved. Taste an indigenous Thracian variety “Pamidi” which is alongside with "Mavroudi" among the oldest Greek grape varieties. You will finally seek Poludeuke, another sophist (2ndAD), whose work "Onomasticon” describes wines traded with their Appellations of Origin, like Maronites, but also the one in Thassos (island). Thassian wine was one of the most famous named wines of antiquity. The oldest inscription that records the wine trade has been found there. In fact, when Greece was under Turkish occupation, wine production in Thassos was so great that the taxes to the Sultan were paid in wine rather than money. Today, the PGI Thassos zone is small but capable of producing high-quality wines. Unfortunately, there is only one tiny winery that you might visit after prior communication.
