Wine and indigenous varieties: the Route of Xinomavro

Do you want to taste wines from the most distinguished ambassador grape variety of Northern Greece? Xinomavro steps into the Black Sea wine map and is leading the way as top Greek red variety.

Xinomavro might not be the grape variety that’s the easiest to pronounce, but it is the one that has clearly got the X factor in the continuing renaissance of the Greek wine industry. Described as ‘the sister of Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir’ Xinomavro wines have been showing double-digit growth with some importers, as much as a 100% year-on-year increase in one case. The noblest of red varieties is grown mainly in Goumenissa and Naoussa but also other winemakers experiment with Xinomavro in other regions. For true wine lovers several wineries will welcome you and offer wine tasting of red, rosé or white (blanc de noir), fresh or matured, dry, semi-dry or semi-sweet, foamy, semi-sparkling, sweet or even as a grape marc spirit, all from Xinomavro. You can also join the “Group of Friends of Xinomavro” where in Rodochori Naoussa Charoula and Panagiotis form “Argatia winery” decided to make this community and share their stories and love for Xinomavro. Since 2010 they gather during harvest and make their own wine. The “SeaofWine” codeword will give you a free pass to this group! You may choose which wineries to visit and make your own route and jump in and out of all the other Greek wine routes. If you plan your trip during November, you will have the pleasure of attending several events during the “International Xinomavro Day” that has been officially established on the 1st of November, in wineries, wine bars and restaurants.
