Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is representing Greece (regions of Kentriki Makedonia, Anatoliki Makedonia – Thraki) in the “Sea of Wine” project.


The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the largest university in Greece, with 10 faculties (40 schools) and 1 single-School Faculty and about  90.299 students, 76.987 in undergraduate programmes and 8.496 in postgraduate programmes. There are also 4.609 at Doctoral level. There are 1.612 faculty members, 371 members of the Special Laboratory Teaching Personnel and 98 members of the Special Technical Laboratory Personnel.

The Faculty of Agriculture is one of the first Faculties founded in AUTH, counting a history of 85 years and approximately 10,000 alumni agronomists. With its thriving educational and research activity has contributed significantly to both national economy and rural development of Greece, as well as to the agricultural sciences and technology worldwide. The School consists of seven Departments: Field Crops and Ecology, Horticulture and Viticulture, Plant Protection, Animal Production, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Economics, Hydraulics, Soil Science and Agricultural Engineering, Laboratory of Informatics in Agriculture. 

 The aim of the specialisation of Agricultural Economics is twofold: a) to prepare competent scientists to understand and address the socio-economic problems arising from agricultural activity, and b) to promote research and the science of the agricultural economics to identify and solve the problems of Greek agriculture. 

Rural Tourism and Wine tourism is one of the most promising research and educational subjects running both at graduate and postgraduate (MSc) as well as PhD studies.

AUTH has a strong partnership network with all wineries in Northern Greece providing both expertise to wine making, agricultural extensions services as well as wine tourism and local rural development. Due to the long -since 1990ies - wine tourism development in the country AUTH has been the responsible partner for Group of activities "T1 Develop Black Sea Wine route" coordinating the main deliverables and outputs  (report on background project analysis, country level database of wine tourism sector, country level wine routes).
