Wine and Mountains

It was in the mountains of Racha, secretly from the enemy, that the monks brought grapes to the pristine lands. The monks cared for the unique grape varieties throughout the summer, picking and crushing them on any sunny and golden autumn day. Only the remains of the monks' cellars are preserved in this place, and the history itself has long been forgotten.

Nevertheless, with the help of the local people, the abandoned story of very Rachian wine was revived and now waiting for wine lovers from all over the world.

This wine route is located in the highland area in the northeast part of western Georgia in Racha. The region is famous for its beautiful landscape, unique culture, special cuisine and famous wine “Khvanchkara”. Due to the surrounding mountains, the winter is cold here, while the summer is warm and short.

Local population is known for its strong traditional culture icons, honey and bagpipe music as well as for bee keeping and carpentry. They still maintain also the ancient traditions of vineyards and winemaking as it was described in ancient Greek and Roman writings. Racha is also an area for walkers, bird-watchers, white-water-rafters and fishermen.

The Upper Caucasus mountain range, with its snowy glaciers, rivers, falls, huge forests and natural caves is a perfect opportunity for you to enjoy the untouched beauty of Georgian Mountains.

After hiking and swimming in the Alpine lakes, you will be welcomed by the family-run guesthouses. Here you can enjoy freshly baked bread, lobiani, famous ham from Racha and other traditional dishes, or take part in cooking masterclasses.

Racha with its traditional vines and impeccable beauty will win your heart forever.
